Choosing the Best Anti-Lick Devices for Your Pet Post-Surgery
After your pet undergoes surgery, keeping their incisional site protected is critical for proper healing. I still love the classic plastic Elizabethan collar that everyone refers to as “Cone of Shame”, but I have rebranded this tried and true gem as the “Cone of Fame.” There are also some other great options to supplement your pet’s healing process.
The “Cone of Fame”
Despite its reputation, the plastic cone is key to minimized trauma to the surgical site. It prevents pets from licking, chewing, or scratching their incision, which can lead to infections or complications. To be effective, the cone must extend beyond the length of your pet’s snout, especially for long-nosed breeds, ensuring they cannot reach the surgical site. I know that the plastic cone can be a bit cumbersome, but the cone usually only needs to be worn for about 10 days when you’re not directly supervising your pet.
Comfy Cone
For those seeking a softer alternative, the Comfy Cone by All Four Paws offers a padded solution. It provides the same protective function as the traditional plastic cone while but may be a bit more comfortable for your recovering pet. Made of flexible materials, it cushions your pet’s neck while still preventing access to the surgical site. This is a great option for pets prone to irritation from hard plastic collars. The majority of other cloth material e-collars, however, are not useful and won’t protect your pet from getting to the incision, so we do not recommend the more flimsy ones. Donut e-collars also are very easy for your pet to get off on their own, but used together with a rigid e-collar , may provide a little comfort for the neck.
Lick Sleeve
For surgeries involving the leg, such as knee or calf procedures, the Lick Sleeve is an excellent choice. This innovative wrap covers the entire leg from the ankle to the belly, providing a barrier that prevents licking or biting at sutures or wounds.
Bodysuits for Cats and Small Dogs
Bodysuits provide full-body protection for chest or belly incisions, making them a practical choice for both cats and small dog breeds. Designed to fit snugly but comfortably, these garments act as a second skin, shielding wounds from interference while allowing freedom of movement. Hot off the press! Lick Sleeves just released two different bodysuit versions for pets. One of them will cover the majority of back legs. While wonderful if you pet has surgery of both back legs or on the body, I find the original Lick Sleeve easier to get on and off if your pet just had one back leg incision.
Why can’t I just ditch the cone?
Anti-lick devices such as Lick Sleeve should be used to supplement, not replace, the cone. When you cannot directly supervise your pet, it’s essential to rely on the cone for comprehensive protection. Using multiple tools together can provide comfort while reducing the risk of complications.
Patience Pays Off
The post-surgery recovery period can be challenging, but it’s a small price to pay for your pet’s health and happiness. The temporary inconvenience of wearing the “Cone of Fame” will help the incision heal, saving you both unnecessary stress in the long run.
